Both vessels Friendship and Tigger Moth departed Quintana Roo on the 20th of March.

A extensive search and rescue mission is currently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two unlocated sailing vessels transporting relief goods en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Military Search Operations Launched

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and military search aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were carrying a minimum of 9 personnel, as stated by a military release.

The vessels had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, the navy said.

Context of Relief to Cuba

The island nation has leaned on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the country struggles through repeated national electricity failures.

"Both crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson associated with the mission commented.

The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their consular staff.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Previous Relief Mission

Just days before, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had transported 14 tons of donated goods to the nation.

That boat, called "Granma 2.0" following the name of the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bicycles and provisions.

Larger Geopolitical Backdrop

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the country began.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with over 50k surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up lately, with statements from several officials emphasizing the complex state of diplomatic ties.

In response to previous proposals, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.

The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to locate the boats and ensure the safety of the crews.

To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
