At least 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
