Cameron Norrie earned the most notable victory of his career by rallying from a early deficit to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this victory marks Norrie's first ever success over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Enormous. Extremely important for me," stated Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in history to overcome a world No 1. "Coming back from health issues last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifiers here. I just sought to embrace my performance in the closing months of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the most significant success of my professional life, my initial victory over the global number one and probably the strongest athlete in the tennis scene right now."

The British player, seeded 31st in the world, also ended Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight premier event victories, which represented the finest stretch of results in the young champion's early professional path.

Match Overview

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently to success in the beginning as he sailed through the opening set. However, the British contender steadily battled back back into the game by executing with sharper placement and engaging the Spaniard into lengthy, demanding exchanges. His persistent steadiness and reliability slowly took its toll.

During large parts of the match, the world number one served well but he struggled badly to get his timing right with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old looked particularly struggling hitting his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for a large part of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, the British player gave Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, maintaining his reliability, athleticism and power all match while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to force himself forward and play aggressively.

After battling for an extended period due to a serious physical setback and struggles with his form, Norrie dropped as low as 91st in the rankings this year. After making the quarter-finals at the grass-court major and the clay-court Grand Slam round of 16 since then, this triumph reinforces the veteran's development as he seeks to make his way to the top 20 and further. Alcaraz, despite his remarkable success, is still hasn't figure out how to produce his top form indoors.
