Jurgen Klopp says a return to lead Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who departed from Liverpool in 2024, has suggested that rejoining the club remains something that could happen. The 58-year-old, following a hugely successful near-decade reign featuring Champions League success and the Reds’ first league title for three decades, currently occupies roles overseeing worldwide football within the Red Bull organization and as an advisor for the DFL.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the league title last season, though countless followers who revere Klopp would embrace the possibility that he may eventually return. In a wide-ranging interview, he explained to his interviewer: “I stated I won't manage a different club in England. Which implies in case it's my former club...yes. In theory, it could happen.”
“I’m 58, that means the choice could be mine later on, it's uncertain. Is a decision required immediately? Then I will not coach again. But thank God, no such pressure exists. I'll wait and observe what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Pressed on what circumstances must arise to draw him back to management, he confessed he was not instantly drawn to such a return. “I'm not entirely sure, I enjoy my current role,” he commented. “No longing for management; No desire to be during downpours for lengthy sessions; No need for press conferences four times, three times a week or having 10-12 interviews each week.
“I don’t miss the dressing room in that context, however, dining out with the team talking freely, is pleasant. With many victories so there was often great spirits at the club. I can still hear Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh vividly recalled for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He spoke highly of the current boss, praising him for the adjustments that won the league last term. The team has suffered a string of losses in all competitions after a summer spending spree, but he rubbished the notion it could be the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker such as Wirtz, doubters will be silenced if you use the wrong words. A remarkable prospect. Ekitike, excellent performer. This is a well-built balanced team. You don’t have to worry regarding the Reds, they'll bounce back.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally on the loss of Jota, a 2020 acquisition during his tenure, along with the consequences at the club. The forward was killed in a car crash together with his sibling in July.
“Can you substitute somebody like Diogo? It’s not about the player himself, it’s the guy he was. I can’t imagine the dressing room absent his presence. I still cannot speak properly regarding this. It was an incredible shock for the entire squad also. No one within the club would cite it for poor performances yet it's the reality. Entering the changing area where he was omnipresent. Handling this individually is not easy. Impossible.”
