Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
