New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
