New York's next mayor states his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, hesitated to declare he would live there right away after his triumph in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he said.
A Contentious Issue
In his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he hails from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a space for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his humble Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
