The star has given the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to protect the UK's independent concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the prize on 16 October as his new release the album was named the top album of the previous year.

The musician has opted to give the cash to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part small stages fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the shows I did around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – approximately 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its initiatives to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

Sam Fender also joined in, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to support 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

The donation assisted spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to issues stemming from flooding, blazes and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Some locations obtained funding support in upgrading infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The concept that money from concerts in major spaces supports the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

Fender is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize funds to charitable organizations.

In the band received the award in 1996 for their album the album, vocalist Jarvis Cocker announced that the act would donate their cash to the charity War Child.

During 2002, musician Ms Dynamite shared her prize among a few good causes, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I gave a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," the artist shared with a publication.

Previously, Ezra Collective gave their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their group, as well as other local music groups.

Additionally the 1994 recipients the group gave their award to a charity for MS after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was sufficient," said singer Heather Small. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the cake. So our victory impacted somebody else's life."

Last week, the MVT announced it had saved two grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in the city and The Croft in Bristol were acquired under the Own Our Venues program, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "ownership units" in the venues.
