The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
A Landmark Year and European Arrival
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to the title and earning best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives support to keep him focused.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals
With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
