The Red Devils Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
