Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a key European tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From The Academy
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."
This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
