Young Australian Charged for Allegedly Attaching Googly Eyes on ‘Cast in Blue’ Sculpture
A young person from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after allegedly defacing a sizable blue sculpture of a legendary being by applying googly eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, 19 years old, appeared remotely at the local court in South Australia on that day, facing with one count of property damage.
Officials commented at the moment of the September incident, the municipal authorities said that CCTV footage showed a person placing fake eyes on the sculpture, which residents have dubbed the “Cast in Blue”.
Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and told the judge she was ill, as reported by media sources, with the magistrate recommending her to find a lawyer before her upcoming hearing in December.
A day after the reported event, the city leader stated that restoration to the much-loved community sculpture would be costly as the stickers could not be removed without harming the art piece.
“This wilful damage to a cherished community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor said in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those members of our community who have welcomed Cast in Blue.”
The mayor added the council would pursue the “significant” restoration expenses from those accountable for the vandalism.
At the time the sculpture was first proposed, it drew mixed reactions from the local community due to its cost and design.
Priced at A$136,000 (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the sculpture represents a mythical megafauna, with the sculpture’s designers influenced by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial discovered in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
